American Airlines has taken action against some of its employees involved in a disturbing incident that occurred on a flight in Phoenix. Several Black passengers were removed from the flight, reportedly due to a complaint about body odor.
American CEO Robert Isom expressed his disappointment in a note to staff, calling the incident unacceptable and a violation of the company’s values. Three Black passengers filed a lawsuit against the airline, claiming they were targeted because of racial discrimination.
The men, who did not know each other and were seated separately, along with other Black passengers, were asked to leave the plane. After a confrontation with airline personnel, they were eventually allowed back on board following an hour-long delay.
American Airlines has not disclosed the number or job titles of the employees placed on leave. A spokesperson stated that the airline is holding those involved accountable and removing team members from service.
In response to the incident, Isom announced plans to establish an advisory group focusing on the experience of Black customers, reporting discrimination allegations, and enhancing diversity training to address bias and discrimination effectively.
American Airlines has been previously accused of discrimination, leading to a travel advisory issued by the NAACP in 2017. The advisory was lifted after American Airlines committed to making changes to address the discrimination complaints.
Isom disclosed that he had discussions with the president of the NAACP regarding the recent incident, emphasizing the airline’s commitment to addressing the issue. The civil rights organization is yet to provide a response to the matter.
