The Minister for Works and Housing, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has shed light on the government’s ongoing efforts to address Ghana’s housing deficit by constructing unit homes.

In an interview on the Point of View on Citi TV with Bernard Avle, Oppong Nkrumah discussed the Affordable Housing Project and the progress being made in providing affordable homes for Ghanaians.

The minister revealed that there are plans to build 8,000 unit homes in Pokuase and 320 homes in Tesano specifically for security services. He emphasized the importance of expediting the construction process by holding regular meetings with developers and coordinators every two weeks, and conducting site visits monthly to ensure progress.

Oppong Nkrumah also emphasized the government’s commitment to completing 325 homes initiated during the term of former President J.A Kufuor. He mentioned that there are about 325 homes in Koforidua from President Kufuor’s initiative that still need to be completed, and efforts are being made to involve the private sector in funding the completion of these projects.

Furthermore, the minister highlighted the government’s efforts in Kumasi, where 30 newly completed units are set to be handed over. He expressed his optimism in establishing a policy framework that will guide future ministers in addressing the housing deficit in Ghana.

Oppong Nkrumah stated, “We don’t expect to finish or build 1.8 million homes today, but my target is that we can deliver a policy framework acceptable to the cabinet and parliament so that ministers under me can then pick it and turn because the blueprint would have been laid.”

The government’s initiatives to tackle Ghana’s housing deficit are a step in the right direction towards providing affordable and quality homes for the citizens.
