President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has emphasized the crucial role that workers play in shaping the upcoming 2024 general elections in Ghana.
Speaking at the May Day celebration, he highlighted the importance of workers’ voices and participation in the electoral process.
Akufo-Addo assured Ghanaians that the 2024 elections would be peaceful and credible, drawing on the success of the recent Ejisu by-elections. He expressed confidence that Ghana would emerge stronger, more united, and more capable of achieving its development goals.
However, the Secretary General of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), Dr. Yaw-Baah, raised concerns about the economic challenges facing workers. He pointed out that the IMF program seemed ineffective in addressing these hardships and called for more decisive action to protect the interests of Ghanaian workers.
In relation to the depreciation of the Cedi, Dr. Yaw Baah suggested a reduction in imports to stabilize the local currency. He urged for a shift towards consuming locally produced goods as a way to alleviate pressure on the Cedi.
The theme for this year’s May Day celebrations in Ghana is “Elections 2024: The Role of Workers and Social Partners in Securing Peaceful Elections for National Development.” It underscores the significant contribution that workers and social partners can make towards ensuring a peaceful electoral process for the country’s overall development.
