Zahara was a well-known and significant South African singer-songwriter. She was 36 years old when she tragically went away on December 11, 2023.

The parents of Zahara are Mlamli and Nokhaya Mkutukana. She wasn’t her parents’ only kid; she had siblings. Mbuyiseli Mkutukana, Mbangedwa Mkutukana, and Nomonde Mkutukana are the names of her siblings. Zahara, the sixth of seven siblings in the Mkutukana family, grew up in a vibrant and active home.
Her distinct childhood in the Phumlani Informal Settlement influenced her early experiences and the ethnic fabric that would eventually pervade her songs.
Zahara sang in both English and her native Xhosa language, and her music is roughly categorized as “Afro-soul”. It has been said of her music that it combines elements of India Arie and Tracy Chapman’s popularization.
She gave a sneak peek at her first Amapiano track on Twitter in December 2021. Zahara’s first amapiano song, “Guqa Ngedolo,” was published in November 2023. Zahara passed away at a Johannesburg hospital on December 11, 2023, following her admission in November due to liver issues. The cause of death is yet unknown.
