The 60-year-old passed away allegedly while snorkeling close to the southern tip of Okinawa Island, according to the coastguard.
An official for the city of Nago stated that the man was discovered off the coast while wearing a snorkel, fins, and underwater mask.
Yu-Gi-Oh!, which translates to “King of Games,” tells the story of spiky-haired teen Yugi, who discovers his inner Egyptian pharaoh after receiving an ancient puzzle. He then uses games to resolve disputes.
Between 1996 and 2004, it appeared in the Japanese comic magazine Shonen Jump, and a real-world trading card game was created from it in 1999.
According to the game’s creator Konami, with sales of more than 22 billion cards a decade later, it earned the Guinness World Record for the best-selling trading card game ever.
The franchise expanded to encompass toys, books, video games, and figurines.
