The Youth Employment Agency (YEA) has employed about 282 disabled people nationwide as district and regional disability officers.
In November 2022, the government abolished the toll system on public roads and bridges, resulting in the layoff of 99 former tollbooth workers.
YEA CEO Kofi Agyepong briefed the media on Thursday, February 22, in Accra. He said the beneficiaries were chosen through a rigorous process and that they will also assist in policy formulation.
“…the Youth Employment Agency has successfully hired 282 disabled individuals who have completed at least their senior year of high school.”
“These people have been hired as employees of our organization. Those with SHS qualifications have been appointed as district disability desk officers throughout the 16 regions and 266 operational districts, respectively, and those with diplomas or higher qualifications have been assigned as regional disability desk officers,” Agyepong stated.
In addition, he said, “This employment affords them a position of influence where they can meaningfully contribute to policy formulation and implementation concerning disability rights, in addition to a sense of pride and financial stability.”
Concerning YEA
The Youth Employment Act 2015 (Act 887) created the Youth Employment Agency (YEA) to enable youth to make significant contributions to the socioeconomic and sustainable development of the country.
Its goal is to assist young people between the ages of 15 and 35 in transitioning from an unemployed to an employed state by providing them with skills training and internship modules.
