Senegalese singer Youssou N’Dour, who was included in Time Magazine’s 2007 list of the 100 most important persons in the world, is referred to in some quarters as the most famous African artist alive.

Youssou N’Dour started singing as a young child performer at neighborhood gatherings in the challenging Medina neighborhood of Dakar, Senegal, West Africa. He was born in Dakar in 1959.

At the age of 12, he made his formal stage debut. By the time he was in his mid-teens, he was singing frequently with the Star Band, the most popular group in Senegal at the time.

Spouse and Children

N’Dour has four children from his first marriage to Mam Mboup, two from his second and current marriage to Aida Coulibaly, and two from his previous relationships. The Youssou N’Dour Foundation’s president,  Aida Coulibaly, is his current spouse.

 

Parents and Siblings

He was born to a Serer father and a Toucouleur mother. Elimane N’Dour and Ndeye Sokhna Mboup were their names.

Bouba Ndour, Youssou N’Dour’s lone sibling, is also a well-known performer in Senegal.
