Businessman Richard Jakpa has been accused by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Yvonne Atakora Obuobisa, of trying to persuade the Attorney-General not to prosecute him.
This allegation surfaced during Jakpa’s cross-examination by the DPP at the High Court on Thursday, June 20.
According to the DPP, Jakpa had requested a private meeting with the Attorney-General via WhatsApp with the intention of convincing him to drop the charges against him. However, Jakpa denied this claim and stated that his goal was simply to clarify his innocence to the Attorney-General.
In a packed courtroom presided over by Justice Afia Serwah Asare-Botwe, Jakpa explained that he wanted to address the alleged misuse of discretionary powers by the Attorney-General, rather than evade prosecution.
He maintained his innocence in connection to the ambulance project and emphasized that any financial loss should be attributed to Dr. Sylvester Anemana, not himself or Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson.
Jakpa’s lawyer objected to the Attorney-General’s attempt to present all 68 WhatsApp messages between Jakpa and the AG as evidence, with the court set to rule on the admissibility of this communication.
