The Association of Passengers Ghana has voiced their frustration over the lack of clear communication from transport operators regarding proposed increases in transport fares across the country. In a press statement released on Monday, the Association’s convener, Afia Kwarteng Asamani, expressed concern about the confusion among commuters and drivers caused by the miscommunication.
Madam Asamani emphasized the urgent need to address this issue promptly to avoid any escalation that could harm the interests of Ghanaians. The association called upon transport operators to engage their members on the approved fares and ensure transparent communication with the public.
They stressed the importance of disseminating accurate information to prevent further confusion and uphold the interests of both commuters and drivers. The Association urged members to remain calm while awaiting the final proposed 20% increase in transport fares by the recognized union, GPRTU, as well as GRTCC.
The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) issued a joint advisory advising commuters not to pay any new transport fares that have not been officially approved. This advisory was in response to the proposed 30% increase in transport fares announced by the Transport Operators Union and the Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana.
The decision to raise fares was attributed to the government’s perceived failure to address lingering grievances within the transport sector adequately. However, this directive has led to confusion and disagreement between commuters and drivers regarding the implementation of the new fare adjustments.
The Association of Passengers Ghana is calling for clear communication and cooperation between all parties involved to ensure a smooth transition to the updated transport fares. It is essential to avoid misunderstandings and uphold the interests of both commuters and transport operators during this time of economic difficulty.
