Pressure is mounting on Chief of Gbesse, Mantse,Nii Ayi-Bonte II to abdicate his seat after he promised to vacate that seat if President John Mahama fails to get a second term in office considering the infrastructural developmnet the country has enjoyed during his tenure.
New Patriotic Party won this year’s election and social media especially Facebook is awash with calls on him to do the honourable thing by stepping down as he promised.
The Chief has however refused to speak to the issue even though he has been afforded the platform throughout this week.
Well here are five things you need to know about him.
1. His real name is Thompson Okine but he is popularly known as Tommy Okine. Nii Ayi-Bonte II is his stool name. He was born to
Emmanuel Ayitey Okai of Gbese and Charlotte Kwamah Ankrah of Otublohum, both
Gas and of blessed memory.
2. Nii Ayi-Bonte II was until becoming a Chief an astute football administrator with Accra-based Accra Hearts of Oak.
3. Nii Ayi-Bonte II is credited with coining the term ‘continental club masters’ and winning the only Champions league Accra Hearts of Oak has won in its history.
4. Nii Ayi-Bonte II discovered Stephen Appiah at a tender age and he moved on to captain Ghana Black Stars and qualify them for their first ever World Cup in 2006.
5. Under the leadership of Tommy Okine, Hearts won the last of their record six straight titles in 2002 and won their seventh league title in eight years .
