Former President John Mahama has come under fire from the Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana for his recent criticisms regarding the neutrality and operational efficiency of the commission.

The EC responded to Mahama’s comments made during an interview at the London School of Economics and Political Science, where he expressed concerns about the individuals appointed to run the elections management body and its operations.

In a statement, the Commission pointed out that all current commissioners were appointed based on the same constitutional provisions that Mahama used to appoint individuals during his presidency. The EC’s Deputy Director of Research, Monitoring, and Evaluation, Mr. Fred Tetteh, highlighted that there were Ghanaians who questioned the neutrality of the person Mahama appointed to the commission.

Tetteh also addressed Mahama’s comments on the efficiency of elections conducted by the Commission, stating that improvements have been made in every election cycle. He noted that the 2020 elections provided voters with the best voting experience, with shorter queues and reduced costs. Additionally, the Commission was able to fully fund the election for the first time in the country’s history, saving the nation a significant amount of money.

The Commission’s response serves as a rebuttal to Mahama’s criticisms and aims to set the record straight on the achievements and progress made by the EC in ensuring free and fair elections in Ghana .
