Fred Kerley led an American clean sweep of the men’s 100m medals on home soil as he claimed his first individual World Championship crown.
Marvin Bracy, 27, beat Trayvon Bromell for silver in Eugene’s reaction time competition in 9.86 seconds. He had won silver at the Olympics.
Since the United States in 1991, no country has won all three medals in the 100-meter race.
Kerley, a former 400-meter runner who won bronze and gold in the 4×400-meter relay in 2019, only switched to the shorter sprint race in 2021.
On his 100m major championship debut, he won the silver medal in Tokyo, and less than a year later, he is the world champion.
With his 9.79-second effort on Friday, he set the fastest heat time in World Championship history, but waited until the very end of the final to cross the finish line 0.02 seconds faster than his countrymen.
In Tokyo, 31 years ago, Carl Lewis, Leroy Burrell, and Dennis Mitchell completed a clean sweep of the 100-meter podium for the United States. Lewis, Calvin Smith, and Emmit King were the leaders of the prior incident, which took place in Helsinki in 1983.
