Construction of the Dome-Berekusu-Kitaase road project has resumed following a temporary halt due to Ghana’s IMF bailout program. The 23-kilometer road, which aims to connect the Greater Accra Region with the Eastern Region, is seen as a crucial link for regional connectivity and economic development.
Initially budgeted at GH¢195 million, the project is being jointly financed by the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development (KFAED) and the Government of Ghana. Groundbreaking for the project took place in July 2022, with an initial completion target set for 24 months.
The project faced a suspension due to the country’s IMF bailout and subsequent debt restructuring, impacting road users and local commuters. However, residents are relieved that construction has resumed and have emphasized the urgent need for its completion.
The deteriorated state of the road has posed health and economic challenges, prompting calls for expedited construction to alleviate these hardships. Concerns from commuters include the road’s uneven surface and inadequate drainage, leading to health risks and transportation difficulties.
Nicholas Tieku, the project site engineer, confirmed the availability of funding from the construction firm, enabling work to resume. He outlined revised timelines for completion and detailed the scope of ongoing and upcoming construction activities aimed at improving road conditions and ensuring sustainable infrastructure development.
Residents and commuters are hopeful that the project will be completed in a timely manner to address the longstanding issues faced due to the road’s poor condition.
