Eugenie Bouchard, a former Wimbledon finalist, has withdrawn from this year’s tournament due to the WTA’s decision to eliminate ranking points.
Following Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, Wimbledon banned Russian and Belaruisan players from competing. The WTA and ATP joined forces to punish them.
Why is Eugenie Bouchard not playing at the Grand Slam?
The elimination of ranking points has no doubt divided sentiment among the playing quota, but Bouchard has decided not to attend.
In 2014, the Canadian star reached the Wimbledon final, but lost to Petra Kvitova and therefore missed out on the trophy.
Bouchard will not be there this time around, eight years after her SW19 near miss, and verified the news on social media.
“Hi everyone, little update from my end,” she tweeted. Due to the WTA’s decision not to grant ranking points at this year’s tournaments, I’ve chosen to withdraw from Wimbledon.
She also mentioned that a recent shoulder ailment played a role, saying, “I only get a limited number of protected ranking (PR) entries due to my shoulder surgery.”
As much as I adore Wimbledon and dread missing it, utilizing a PR ticket in an event with no ranking points is illogical.
