American screenwriter William Dodson Broyles Jr. was born on October 8, 1944, in Houston, Texas.

He contributed immensely as a screenwriter to the TV show China Beach, the movies Apollo 13, Cast Away, Entrapment, Planet of the Apes, Unfaithful, The Polar Express, and Jarhead, as well as the television series China Beach.

His parents made sure he received an all-rounded education. Broyles completed his tertiary education at Rice University and Robert E. Lee High School, receiving a B.A. in history in 1966.

He worked as a contributing editor to the school newspaper, the Rice Thresher. Broyles served as the student organization president while attending Rice University in the 1960s and received the Hugh Scott Cameron award for exceptional community service.

He continues to be a steadfast supporter of the university, having given the graduation address in 1983 and being honored as a distinguished alumnus in 1993.
