A lawyer, scholar, and president of the University of Iowa and Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago, Illinois, Willard Lee Boyd was born on March 29, 1927. Boyd was born in 1927 on March 29. He was raised in St. Paul, Minnesota, where he graduated from Murray High School in 1944. From 1945 until 1947, he worked as a U.S. Navy Hospital Corpsman.

He most recently served as Rawlings/Miller Professor of Law and President Emeritus at the University of Iowa College of Law. In addition to leading the Iowa Cultural Trust, Boyd was a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, American Law Institute, Department of State Cultural Property Advisory Committee, and board of National Arts Strategies.
