Iranian author and human rights advocate Narges Mohammadi has overcome many obstacles in her unwavering quest for justice and freedom. Her journey began with her initial arrest in 1998, which resulted in a year of jail due to her outspoken criticism of the Iranian government.
Due to her dedication to the cause, Mohammadi visited the Islamic Revolutionary Court in April 2010, where her connection to the DHRC came under inquiry. She was briefly released on $50,000 bond, but she was quickly taken back into custody and detained inside the walls of Evin prison.
Her health declined while she was in custody, and she started to have occasional loss of muscle control that was similar to seizures. She spent a month in jail before being freed and allowed to seek medical attention.
Narges Mohammadi persevered with her unflinching passion despite the challenges she faced. She was once again charged in July 2011 with “acting against national security,” “membership in the DHRC,” and “propagating messages against the regime.” Another battle in her never-ending fight for human rights was the legal one.
In Karaj, Alborz Province, on November 16, 2021, Mohammadi was detained while attending a memorial service for Ebrahim Ketabdar, who was killed by Iranian security forces during nationwide protests in November 2019. Amnesty International and the International Federation for Human Rights both condemned her arrest, calling it arbitrary.
