Jontay Porter, a former NBA power forward, recently found himself banned from the league due to violating gambling rules.
After short stints with the Memphis Grizzlies and the Detroit Pistons, Porter was signed by the Toronto Raptors, where he played for about four months.
The NBA investigation found that Porter had disclosed confidential information to sports bettors, limited his own participation in games for betting purposes, and even bet on NBA games himself. Prior to a game in March, Porter shared confidential information about his health status with a known NBA bettor, who then placed a bet on Porter underperforming in the game, hoping to win $1 million.
The investigation also revealed that Porter limited his own game participation to influence the outcome of bets on his performance in at least one Raptors game. The league emphasized the importance of protecting the integrity of NBA competition and that Porter’s actions warranted severe punishment.
The NBA investigation into Porter began in March 2024 after suspicious betting activities were noticed surrounding the Raptors’ January and March games. The league expressed a commitment to safeguarding the integrity of the game and working closely with industry stakeholders to address regulatory gaps.
Porter had signed with the Toronto Raptors in December 2023 under a two-way contract, having previously played for the Memphis Grizzlies, Detroit Pistons, and the Motor City Cruise. The league made it clear that violations of their gambling rules, especially betting on games and disclosing confidential information, would not be tolerated. The investigation remains ongoing, and further findings may come to light in the future.
