Novak Djokovic says he is no longer interested in the 2022 ATP Cup.
“World No. 1 Novak Djokovic has withdrawn from the 2022 ATP Cup,” the tournament’s organisers stated in a statement on Wednesday, ahead of the tournament’s commencement on Saturday.
Tennis Australia, which organises the Australian Open, has mandated that all competitors be vaccinated against the coronavirus or have a medical exemption issued by an independent panel of specialists.
“Team Serbia will now be led by world number 33 Dusan Lajovic,” the organisers stated in a statement as well.
Why did Novak Djokovic pull out from ATP Cup in Sydney?
The 34-year-old, who has frequently refused to declare if he has been immunised against COVID-19, restated his position on the vaccine’s freedom of choice last month.
Srdjan Djokovic’s father warned a Serbian television channel last month that Djokovic will most likely withdraw from the major, calling Tennis Australia’s stance on required immunisation “manipulation.”
