Argentina star Lionel Messi opens up on why he started learning English having been linked with a move to Premier League champions Manchester City in 2020.
Before he joined his former teammate Neymar at PSG from Barcelona, he was rumoured to both City and Inter Milan.
Why doesn’t Lionel Messi speak English during interviews?
His decision to start learning English gave the impression he may have been open to a reunion with Pep Guardiola, who Messi won two Champions Leagues playing under for Barcelona.
In an interview with Spanish Sports Journalist Guillem Balague on the day of his PSG unveiling, Messi confirmed that he has been learning English but it is not yet able to speak it fluently.
Messi said: “I’ve been learning English for a year and a half”
Then Balague quizzed; But when you’re there in England, you get to learn it through necessity… Messi responded; Yeah, exactly. I understand it but I don’t speak it.”
It has not been a perfect start to life for the little magician in Paris but he is expected to hit the ground running soon.
