Why Joni Mitchell is removing her music from Spotify

One of Canada’s music legends Joni Mitchell is done with music streaming platform, Spotify.

Her reason is simple — the popular streaming platform is condoning misinformation about COVID vaccines, spearheaded by Joe Rogan.

A few days ago, Canadian music legend Neil Young asked Spotify to choose between him and Joe Rogan. The streaming platform actually chose Joe Rogan and removed Neil Young’s songs from the platform upon request.

Now, Joni Mitchell, who shares the same manager as Young, is backing her comrade and old friend by pulling off her music catalog from the platform.

She released a statement on Friday, January 28, 2022, on her official website asking Spotify to remove her songs from their platform. She has been hosted on the platform for years and she has made a lot of money from streaming.

“I’ve decided to remove all my music from Spotify,” her statement said.

“Irresponsible people are spreading lies that are costing people their lives. I stand in solidarity with Neil Young and the global scientific and medical communities on this issue.”

Mitchell took this decision and made it public just two days after Spotify confirmed it would be granting Young’s request to have his music removed from the platform.

Young made the demand on Monday, January 24, writing in part, “With an estimated 11 million listeners per episode, JRE, which is hosted exclusively on Spotify, is the world’s largest podcast and has tremendous influence. Spotify has a responsibility to mitigate the spread of misinformation on its platform, though the company presently has no misinformation policy.”
