Why is Shaun White called The Flying Tomato?

Shaun White has had the nickname “The Flying Tomato” since he was a teenager. He was given the name due to the color of his hair. He has long, bright red hair.

Rolling Stone magazine in 2006 described how White embraced his nickname but later dropped it because he was tired of it.

“He used to embrace it, even wearing headbands with a flying-tomato logo, but he has grown tired of it,” the magazine noted.

White has also been nicknamed “Animal”, a reference to a character from The Muppet Show.

At age 19, the young Shaun White wowed spectators when he entered the Olympic scene with his long, red, hair.

He performed fast flying tricks that were so unique and spectacular that fans cheered his nickname ‘The Flying Tomato’.
