Gerald Norman Springer was an American businessman, broadcaster, journalist, actor, producer, lawyer, and politician of British origin. Springer was Cincinnati’s 56th mayor from 1977 until 1978.
Why is Jerry Springer famous?
He was notorious for hosting the tabloid talk show Jerry Springer between September 30, 1991, and July 26, 2018, and debuting the Jerry Springer Podcast in 2015. From 2007 to 2008, Springer hosted America’s Got Talent, and from September 2019 until 2022, Springer hosted the courtroom show, Judge Jerry.
Springer began his broadcasting career while a student at Tulane University on WTUL New Orleans FM, a progressive genre college radio station.
It continued while he was mayor of Cincinnati, with album-oriented rock radio station WEBN-FM, known for its laid-back and irreverent radio approach. Springer’s commentaries were broadcast on the station under the heading “The Springer Memorandum.” His broadcasting career was established by the popularity of these observations.
Springer was employed as a political reporter and pundit on WLWT, Cincinnati’s NBC affiliate, which had the lowest-rated news program at the time. Later, as a chief news anchor and managing editor, he needed a broadcast catchphrase in the style of previous renowned newsmen.
He developed his signature slogan at WLWT with the assistance of others: “Take care of yourself, and each other.” Within two years, he and colleague Norma Rashid had become Cincinnati’s number one news anchor.
He was the most popular in the city for five years, winning 10 local Emmy Awards for his nightly commentary, which was widely satirized by Cincinnati radio personality Gary Burbank. Those observations would become his “Final Thought” on Jerry Springer.
