“Battle of the Bastards” is the ninth and final episode of HBO’s fantasy television series Game of Thrones’ sixth season. It is the show’s 59th overall episode. The series co-creators David Benioff and D. B. Weiss penned the script, and it was directed by Miguel Sapochnik.

Jon Snow and Ramsay Bolton face combat for control of Winterfell. The majority-Wildling force of Jon’s army nearly overcomes the Bolton army, but finally loses when Sansa Stark and Petyr Baelish appear with the Knights of the Vale.

At the conclusion of the conflict, Sansa kills Ramsay after capturing him. Daenerys Targaryen overcomes the Masters in Meereen as she forms new allies.

It was praised as a “masterpiece,” one of the series’ best episodes, and one of the best television shows ever. Critics gave “Battle of the Bastards” a great deal of praise. Critics praised the battle in the North as “terrifying, gripping, and exhilarating,” lauded Kit Harington’s performance, and dubbed Daenerys’ reunion with her dragons at the episode’s beginning “thrilling.”

Ramsay and Jon’s clash was referred to by the extras as “Battle of the Bastards” because it involved just the two of them.
