Iggy Azalea’s “Fancy” has all of the qualities of a classic summer jam, to the point that I’m somewhat surprised it wasn’t a bigger hit even sooner.
Here are a few observations regarding why the song has become a monster hit.
Why is Iggy Azalea famous?
- Infectious Song: This song is as catchy as pop hits come. That bouncy electro-hop beat. That memorable sing-along chorus. The overall suaveness of Iggy’s raps. It’s just a fun, infectious song.
- Great Video: Before I ever heard “Fancy,” I read an article about the video and how it was a clever homage to the movie Clueless. It lives up to the hype, with Iggy putting herself in the role of Cher while reenacting scenes from the film. While this may not mean much to the teenage crowd, people who love 90’s movies will appreciate this video.
- Exposure: Iggy’s success isn’t happening in a vacuum. On the Billboard singles chart for the week of Jul 19, 2014 , “Fancy” was the No. 1 song; the No. 3 song on the charts was another Iggy song, “Problem,” in which she performed alongside Ariana Grande. So Iggy had two songs in the top 5 in the same week. She also recently released “Black Widow,” a song with Rita Ora, and it has been gaining heavy radio play. Considering how hot Iggy Azalea is right now, don’t be surprised if “Black Widow” slowly climbs up the pop charts, particularly after its video is released.
