Michael Eugene Archer, better known by his stage name D’Angelo, is a singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and record producer from the United States. D’Angelo rose to prominence after co-producing the single “U Will Know” by R&B supergroup Black Men United.
Brown Sugar, his debut studio album, was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America and received widespread acclaim from music critics, who credited the album with ushering in the neo soul movement. Its third single, “Lady,” made the Billboard Hot 100 top ten.
D’Angelo would later work with Erykah Badu, Lauryn Hill, and his then-girlfriend Angie Stone. Voodoo (2000) debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200 and received widespread critical acclaim. The lead single from the album, “Untitled (How Does It Feel),” earned him a Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance; Voodoo also won Best R&B Album.
