Christopher John Cornell was a singer and songwriter from the United States. On July 20, 1964, in Seattle, Washington, Cornell was born Christopher John Boyle. Cornell’s parents are Edward F. Boyle, an Irish Catholic pharmacist, and Karen Boyle, a Jewish accountant and self-proclaimed psychic. Cornell and his siblings adopted their mother’s maiden name, Cornell, as their surname after his parents divorced when he was a teenager. Cornell was the youngest of six siblings, with two older brothers and three younger sisters.
Cornell’s musical influences ranged from Little Richard to The Beatles. Between the ages of nine and eleven, he spent a two-year period solidly listening to The Beatles after discovering a large collection of Beatles records abandoned in the basement of a neighbor’s house. He described himself as a loner at this age, and he used rock music to cope with his anxiety around other people.
