Bill Russell was an NBA icon who was one of the best basketball players of all time.
He won more NBA titles than any other player and helped the Boston Celtics become one of the league’s most successful clubs. His wife Jeannine and two of his children survive the 11-time NBA champion.
He died at the age of 88.
Why is Bill Russell not in the GOAT conversation?
Because Bill’s abilities were geared toward the less glamorous aspects of the game. Most people are aware of his greatness.
Using the suggested “best of all-time” criteria, Russell cannot be ranked among the top because, while he won several times and excelled on defense, he was not dominating offensively.
He was a terrible shooter, shooting 44 percent from the field for a center. The one thing he excelled at was rebounding the ball.
Kareem, Dream, and Wilt are all excellent players. In his 13-year NBA career, he only shot better than 45 percent four times.
