The tale of father Richard Williams, mother Serena Williams, and sister Venus Williams.
The film, which focused on Richard and his coaching of his two daughters, tries to provide light on the lives of these two tennis legends, who are arguably the most well-known tennis players ever.
Richard Williams and Oracene Price gave birth to Serena and Venus Williams in 1980 and 1981, respectively.
The two relocated to Compton at a young age, and by the time they were four, they were playing tennis.
Prior to moving to West Palm Beach, Florida, where they began working with renowned tennis instructor Rick Macci, the duo was mostly guided by their parents.
After a while, their father took them out of the academy and continued to train them at home.
Their background differs greatly from that of most tennis professionals who attended prestigious academies. Serena is quoted as stating when questioned about their unconventional path:
“Everybody behaves differently. Venus and I may have simply tried a different route and it was successful for us.”
Famously, the father of the Williams sisters, after whom the movie is named, served as their primary coach.
Richard’s own background in the sport is unique because he stated that “Old Whiskey” was his trainer.
After seeing Romanian tennis legend Virginia Ruzici play, Richard made the decision that he wanted his daughters to play tennis.
Richard claims that he began preparing the girls at the age of 4 and developed an 85-page plan for them.
