He was born to Beti-Wyn (née Davies), a nursery school teacher, and Eurwyn Evans, a primary school teacher.
Llr Ifans, his younger brother, is also an actor. He grew up in Ruthin, where he attended Ysgol Pentrecelyn and was raised speaking Welsh as his first language. He completed his O and A levels at Ysgol Maes Garmon, a Welsh medium secondary school in Mold.
