Why did Neil Young get taken off Spotify?

Musician Neil Young is following through on his threat to pull his extensive and well-loved sonic catalog from Spotify.

In a follow-up letter posted just after his initial announcement, Young thanked Merck Mercuriadis and his company Hipgnosis Songs fund, which bought a 50 percent stake in Young’s publishing rights last year.

He also called Spotify founder Daniel Ek his friend and said he was disappointed.

Why did Neil Young get taken off Spotify?

Young took a stand against the company’s relationship with podcaster Joe Rogan this week.

Accusing Spotify of propagating Covid-19 misinformation through Rogan’s hit show, which Spotify bought exclusive rights to in a deal reportedly worth at least $100 million.

Spotify’s CEO, Daniel Ek, has said that his company isn’t dictating what creators can say on its platform.

How much money will Neil Young lose from Spotify?

Neil Young says he expects to lose 60% of his streaming revenue after removing his music from Spotify. This is translated into hundreds of thousands of dollars.
