On September 28, 1929, Mangeshkar was born in Indore (in the present-day Indore district of Madhya Pradesh), then the capital of the princely state of Indore, which was part of the Central India Agency in British India.
Deenanath Mangeshkar, her father, was a Marathi and Konkani classical singer and theatre actor. Ganesh Bhatt Navathe Hardikar (Abhisheki), Deenanath’s father, was a Karhade Brahmin who worked as a priest at Goa’s famous Mangeshi Temple. Yesubai Rane, Deenanath’s mother, belonged to the Devadasi community of Goa, a matrilineal community of temple artists now known as Gomantak Maratha Samaj.
Yesubai was a well-known musician as a Devadasi. Hardikar was Deenanath’s father’s surname. Deenanath took the surname Mangeshkar after the name of his ancestral village in Goa, Mangeshi.
Her mother, Shevanti (later renamed Shudhamati), was a Gujarati woman from Thalner, Bombay Presidency (now in northwest Maharashtra). Shevanti was Deenanath’s second wife; his first wife Narmada, who died before their marriage, was Shevanti’s older sister. Her maternal grandfather, Seth Haridas Ramdas Lad, was a prosperous businessman and Thalner’s landlord from Gujarat. Her maternal grandmother taught her Gujarati folk songs such as the garbas of Pavagadh.
