Melisandre, often known as the Red Woman or the Red Witch served as King Stannis Baratheon’s valued advisor and a Red Priestess in the R’hllor religion during his ascent to the Iron Throne.
In the squalid city of Asshai, in the far eastern province of Essos, Melisandre was reared by her mother, a slave. She claimed that as a youngster, starvation was all she had ever known, and as a young lady, all she had ever known was one bowl of bland stew every day.
She was eventually elevated to the rank of Red Priestess by the Lord of Light, and she asserts to possess strong magical powers, including the ability to predict the future by gazing into a fire’s flames. Melisandre’s big ruby necklace sparkles when she wields her magic.
By masking her age, the same necklace also extends her life. She crossed the Narrow Sea to deliver a sermon before Lord Stannis Baratheon’s court at the island castle of Dragonstone just before the War of the Five Kings.
She became a close advisor to Stannis since he followed her religion and the majority of his family thought he was the Prince that was Promised of an old prophecy—the reincarnation of Azor Ahai.
Why did Jon Snow refuse to sleep with Melisandre in ‘Game of Thrones’?
Jon Snow refused to sleep with Melisandre because he already feels terrible about sleeping with Ygritte.
