Amidst a scandal over racially abusive videos, YouTube star Jenna Mourey, also known by her channel name Jenna Marbles, revealed on Thursday that she is leaving the website.
She apologized for offensive material in a video titled “A Message” and stated, “I feel like we’re in a time when we’re purging ourselves of anything and everything harmful.”
With more than 20 million subscribers, Mourey highlighted specific videos from 2011 and 2012, including one in which she impersonated rapper Nicki Minaj while wearing blackface, another in which a rap song made fun of Asians, and one in which she criticized women who “slept about.”
She admitted that she had not intended to impersonate Minaj in blackface. “I do want to say how incredibly sorry I am if releasing this video or pulling this imitation ever offended you; that was never my aim. It’s unacceptable. It’s deplorable. It’s terrible. I wish it hadn’t happened in the past.
She continued by saying the rap song was “inexcusable” and “shouldn’t have existed,” which featured the line “Hey Ching Chong Wing Wong, shake your King Kong ding dong.”
The old videos and other materials from the beginning of her channel are no longer accessible to the general public, she noted.
I simply can’t exist on this channel for the time being. Mourey responded, clearly upset, “I guess I’m just going to move away from this channel for now. “I have no idea how long it will last.
I just want to be sure that the things I’m putting into the world aren’t doing anyone any harm, thus I need to end this channel either right away or forever.”
She is best known for her early satirical how-to videos and comic routines, many of which have since been removed from the internet, as well as more contemporary lifestyle and DIY content.
