American former YouTuber Jenna Nicole Mourey, better known by her stage as Jenna Marbles, was born on September 15, 1986.
Her YouTube channel has amassed over 20 million subscribers and around 1.7 billion video views over the course of ten years.
Following accusations of blackface and bigotry, Mourey posted an apologetic video on June 25, 2020. In this video, she discusses the objectionable content in her videos from 2011 to 2012.
This included a Nicki Minaj impersonation in which she wore heavy face makeup, rapped anti-Asian trash while dressed in traditional Asian clothes, and condemned women who had slept with numerous people, which she blamed on ingrained misogyny. Mourey maintains it was never her intent to injure or offend anyone, conceding that these actions were “shameful” and “terrible”, hoping “it wasn’t part of past”.
Following these remarks, she announced an indefinite break from YouTube. Julien Solomita, Mourey’s boyfriend, said on Twitter on June 26 that the couple’s joint podcast and Twitch streams will also be suspended indefinitely. Mourey “was not the first to use the term ‘accountability’ in a YouTube apology, but she may have been the first to mean it,” according to the Berkeley Beacon genuinely.
Why did Jenna Marbles change her name?
Mourey used the alias Jenna Marbles after her mother complained that searching “Mourey” on Google yielded only Jenna’s videos. Jenna’s mother was unemployed at the time Jenna’s first video went viral, and she was worried that the content might turn off potential employers.
