Dave was between the age of 31 to 34-year-old when he dated Alanis Morissette. The two broke off their relationship before the Canadian-American musician, songwriter and actress, Alanis Morissette released the single “You Oughta Know” from her album “Jagged Little Pill”.

The exact reason for their breakup still remains a mystery. However, it could be speculated that Dave did not treat Alanis right during their relationship, hence, she put all her thoughts about him into the music.

Dave denied it several times that the subject in Alanis Morissette’s “You Oughta Know” song was not him.

In an interview with BuzzFeed, dave said;” I think it’s just really funny that’s it’s become this urban legend, so many years after the fact. I dated Alanis [Morissette] in 1992. You know, it’s just funny to be the supposed subject of that song. First of all, the guy in that song is a real a-hole, so I don’t want to be that guy.”

However, in 2008, Dave finally admitted in an interview with Calgary Herald, that he was the subject in Morissette’s song “You Oughta Know”.
