New Zealand rugby union player Connor Garden-Bachop tragically passed away following a medical event in Christchurch on June 17.
The 25-year-old Māori All Black had recently thanked the Highlanders on social media for an “unforgettable five years.”
Connor Garden-Bachop, who had Cook Islands heritage, was born on April 19, 1999, and primarily played as a wing for the Highlanders in Super Rugby. Coming from a rugby-centric family, his father, Stephen Bachop, and mother, Sue Garden-Bachop, both had ties to the sport. His uncle Graeme Bachop played for the All Blacks and Japan during his career, while his cousin Aaron Mauger represented the All Blacks and coached the Highlanders.
In his short career, Connor made a significant impact, scoring three tries in his first five Super Rugby games. He also represented the Māori All Blacks in two Tests against Ireland in 2022. His sudden death has sent shockwaves throughout the rugby community, with tributes pouring in from around the world.
The Highlanders, Wellington Rugby, New Zealand Rugby, the New Zealand Māori Rugby Board, and the New Zealand Rugby Players Association have extended their deepest condolences to the Garden-Bachop family during this difficult time. The sporting world has lost a talented player, a committed teammate, and a bright light both on and off the field.
As the rugby world mourns the loss of Connor Garden-Bachop, his legacy as a dedicated player, loving father to twin girls, and cherished member of the community will continue to be remembered and celebrated.
