On Friday, September 16, 1988, at Riverfront Stadium, Tom Browning of the Cincinnati Reds pitched the 12th perfect game in MLB history, blanking the Los Angeles Dodgers 1-0.

Browning became the first left-handed pitcher to do the feat since Sandy Koufax’s perfect game in 1965. As of 2021, this perfect game is the only one to have been pitched on a synthetic field in Major League history.

Browning was in his sixth season when he made his Major League Baseball debut with the Reds in September 1984.

Through the end of the 1987 season, he had a 3.95 ERA and a 45-35 career record. On September 16, 1988, he made his home debut against the Dodgers with a 15-5 record.
