In 1960, in the South African city of Soweto, Mandela was born. She had just turned 18 months old when her father was put in prison for his involvement in the anti-apartheid struggle. Her mother, who was also subjected to abuse and detention by the apartheid regime, was where she spent a large portion of her childhood.
Early on, Mandela was involved in the fight against apartheid. In addition to the African National Congress (ANC) Youth League, she belonged to the Soweto Youth Congress. At the University of Witwatersrand, she was also an active student leader.
