The seventeenth and final Targaryen to sit on the Iron Throne, Aerys II Targaryen ruled from 262 to 283 A.C. He was also known as the Mad King and King Scab. Rhaella, the mother of Rhaegar, Viserys, and Daenerys Targaryen, bore him three children who survived to adulthood.

When he first came to power, Aerys had great potential to bring prosperity and peace to the Seven Kingdoms, but he later developed mental illness as a result of, among other things, numerous stillbirths and miscarriages, the passing of three sons, and a brief uprising known as the Defiance of Duskendale, in which he was held captive for six months by a rebellious lord. He became ruthless and too suspicious. During Robert’s Rebellion, Ser Jaime Lannister, a member of his own Kingsguard, ultimately ended his life.

Lyanna Stark and the late Prince of Dragonstone Rhaegar Targaryen are the parents of Jon Snow, also known as Aegon Targaryen. Jon is portrayed as Lord Eddard Stark’s bastard son from a young age. He grew up in Winterfell with Eddard’s biological kids. Jon’s true parentage is kept a secret from everyone in order to shield him from those who wanted to completely destroy House Targaryen.
