James D. Pillen (born December 31, 1955) is an American politician, veterinarian, and livestock producer who has served as Nebraska’s 41st and current governor since 2023. Pillen, a Republican, sat on the University of Nebraska Board of Regents from 2013 until 2023.
Pillen was born in the town of Columbus, Nebraska. He got a Bachelor of Science degree in animal science from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine after graduating from Lakeview Junior-Senior High School in 1974.
Pillen played defensive back for the Nebraska Cornhuskers football team under Tom Osborne from 1975 through 1978. In 2004, he was inducted into the Nebraska Football Hall of Fame.
