Sade was born in Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria, on January 16, 1959, and is a resident of Ekiti State. Her middle name, Folasade, means “honor deserves the crown” in Arabic. Her parents are English district nurse Anne Hayes and Nigerian economist Adebisi Adu, who has Yoruba ancestry.
They initially connected in London, were wed there in 1955, and then emigrated to Nigeria. When Sade was four years old, her parents separated. After Anne Hayes went back to England, Sade and her older brother Banji moved in with their grandparents close to Colchester, Essex.
