American singer, songwriter, and musician Roy Kelton Orbison (April 23, 1936 – December 6, 1988) was renowned for his passionate singing style, intricate song structures, and somber, emotive songs. Critics referred to his music as operatic, leading to his being dubbed “The Caruso of Rock” and “The Big O.” While the majority of male rock and roll musicians at the time opted to project machismo, many of Orbison’s songs expressed vulnerability. He performed while remaining still, dressed in all-black to match his dyed-black hair, and sporting dark sunglasses to help him overcome his shyness and stage anxiety.
