On February 27, 1936, Ronald Dale Barassi Jr. was born in Castlemaine, Victoria, Australia. He was a former Australian rules football player, coach, and media figure.
Ron is recognized as one of the game’s most important characters. Three Australian rules football players have received the same award in the Sport Australia Hall of Fame, including Barassi, who was the first to be inducted as a “Legend” into the Australian Football Hall of Fame.
In his first encounter against Barassi in 1953, Footscray’s Charlie Sutton “flattened” them. Smith used Barassi as a second ruckman in 1954 despite his lack of proper size for the job and initial scepticism over Barassi’s ideal position.
Barassi’s primary role was that of a second rover, leading to the emergence of the football term “ruck-rover”. This tactic was eventually adopted by the majority of clubs within a short period of time, opening the door for a new kind of speedier on-ball play.
Barassi was revered as a trailblazer and enjoyed a prosperous coaching career. Thanks to his outstanding performance and dedication to the sport, which are best exemplified by his support for the creation of a national club-level tournament, he has made a name for himself in Australian popular culture. In addition to being chosen as a ruck rover for the AFL’s Team of the Century in 1996, he was made a Member of the Order of Australia in 1978.
