Iranian human rights advocate Narges Mohammadi serves as the deputy director and spokesperson for the Defenders of Human Rights Center (DHRC). She has fought for both the rights of prisoners and the repeal of the death sentence in Iran.
She has spent time in prison as a direct result of her advocacy for human rights. She had criticized the Iranian regime and was sentenced to a year in prison starting in 1998. As a result of her work with the DHRC, she was incarcerated for one month in 2010.
Due to charges stemming from her support for human rights, the Revolutionary Court condemned her to 16 years in prison on May 18, 2016. After serving her four-year sentence, she was released on October 8, 2020, thanks to a bill that reduced prison terms for political prisoners.
Narges Mohammadi worked for prisoner rights while she was incarcerated, and after she was freed, she stepped up her efforts by backing a campaign against “white torture,” a type of psychological abuse used by the Iranian government that subjects prisoners to total sensory deprivation and solitary confinement.
