Michael Oher was born on May 28, 1986, in Memphis, Tennessee. Oher began playing football in his freshman year of high school at a Memphis public high school.

Division II Lineman of the Year and First Team All-Tennessee honors were given to Oher in 2003. He also received two letters in basketball and two letters in track.
