Mets pitcher Jorge López balances family life with career on the mound
Jorge López is not just a talented pitcher for the New York Mets, he’s also a devoted family man. The Puerto Rican native began his Major League Baseball career in 2015 and has been making waves ever since.
When he’s not on the pitcher’s mound, López can be found spending time with his wife, Karla López, and their son, Mikael López. The couple, originally from Cayey, Puerto Rico, faced a major challenge when Hurricane Maria struck the island in 2017. The devastating storm destroyed everything in its path, leaving the López family stranded at Karla’s parents’ house.
López recalled the harrowing experience in an interview with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, describing how they were cut off from their families with all the roads blocked. Despite the hardships they faced, the couple emerged stronger than ever.
Jorge and Karla share one child, Mikael Andrés López, who has battled Familial Mediterranean Fever and Crohn’s disease from a young age. Their son spent much of his early years in and out of hospitals fighting the autoimmune disorders. In 2021, Mikael underwent a successful bone marrow transplant, which provided hope for a brighter future.
In a heartwarming moment close to Father’s Day in 2022, Mikael was finally able to cheer for his father from the stands for the first time. It was a special moment for the López family, celebrating both Jorge’s success on the field and Mikael’s recovery.
Jorge López joined the New York Mets in 2023, signing a one-year contract with the team. He made his debut in 2024 and has already made an impact with his impressive pitching skills. However, his passion for the game sometimes leads to fiery moments, like the time he was ejected from a game for arguing with an umpire and dramatically threw his glove into the stands on his way off the field.
Despite his competitive spirit on the field, López’s love for his family shines through in every aspect of his life. From supporting his son through health challenges to cherishing precious moments with his wife, Jorge López exemplifies the true meaning of balancing family life with a successful career in professional sports.
