He has written for the movies Apollo 13, Cast Away, Entrapment, Planet of the Apes, Unfaithful, The Polar Express, and Jarhead in addition to the television show China Beach. Additionally, he contributed to the script for Saving Private Ryan.

The son of William Dodson Broyles and Elizabeth (née Bills), Broyles was born in Houston, Texas. He was raised in Baytown, Texas, attended Rice University and received his B.A. in history there in 1966 after graduating from Robert E. Lee High School. When he was a student at Rice, Broyles was an involved part of the community and a volunteer editor for the Rice Thresher.
Broyles began submitting pieces to the Houston Post in 1966. During the 1965–1966 academic year, Broyles presided over the Rice Student Association and received the Hugh Scott Cameron Award for distinguished civic work. Throughout his career, he has continued to be a steadfast supporter of the university, giving the commencement address in 1983 and being honored as a distinguished alumnus in 1993.
