English actor, voice artist, and novelist Leslie Samuel Phillips was born on 20 April 1924. Leslie Samuel Phillips was born in Tottenham, London, England.

He was the third child of Frederick Samuel Phillips and Cecelia Margaret, who both worked at the Edmonton-based stove manufacturer Glover and Main. His street is situated, as Phillips described it, “outside the auditory reach of the Bow Bells but inside the vast footprint of cockneydom.”

The family had moved to Chingford, Essex, where Phillips attended Larkswood Primary School in 1931. Phillips has so claimed to be both an Essex boy and a cockney.

The “filthy, sulphurous” air of the facility caused his father to acquire a weak heart and oedema, which ultimately led to his death in 1935 at the age of 44.

As he gained popularity in the 1950s, his catchphrases “Ding Dong” and “He-llo” were utilized to portray sleek, upper-class comedic roles. He made appearances in the Carry On and Doctor in the House film series in addition to the renowned BBC radio comedy The Navy Lark.

Phillips had sad roles later in his acting career, including one in the Peter O’Toole movie Venus for which he received a BAFTA nomination (2006).
