Gilsig was born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, the daughter of writer and translator Claire Gilsig and engineer Toby Gilsig. At the age of 12, she began her acting career as a voice actor in Masquerade, a National Film Board of Canada film. She is of Jewish ancestry.
Gilsig studied at McGill University in Montreal from 1989 to 1993, earning a Bachelor of Arts in English in 1993. Later, she continued her acting education at Harvard University’s Institute for Advanced Theater Training.
